The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) calls for new orchestral scores from Singaporean and Singapore-based composers aged 35 years and below for inclusion in the SSO Young Composer Workshop held at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music on 11 February 2014, which is held in conjunction with the orchestra’s 35th anniversary.
The workshop will be conducted by the SSO’s Associate Conductor Jason Lai, and up to three of the works will be performed by the SSO in a free concert at the Conservatory on 13 February 2014. Says Mr Anthony Brice, the SSO’s General Manager: “The SSO has for many years actively supported the development of young talent through performance opportunities including the President's Young Performers Concert. I’m delighted the SSO is now able to offer this workshop and potential performance for young composers which will be of tremendous value to their development as well as showcasing the burgeoning talent in Singapore.”
Eligibility requirements:
Score submissions are welcomed from Singaporean or Singapore-based composers who should be no more than 35 years of age as of 1 February 2014.
Maximum instrumentation is 2.2.2.2 / 4.2.3.1 / T / Strings 12.10.8.6.4 (divisi up to two parts per group). The 2nd wind players may double on Piccolo, Cor anglais, Bass clarinet and Contra bassoon respectively. Works that call for additional instruments will not be considered.
Duration of the scores should be between 5’ and 10’. Works longer than 10’ may be considered for inclusion at the sole discretion of the SSO
Works must be unpublished compositions which have not previously received a public performance and for which the composer holds full copyright.
A maximum of two different works may be submitted by each applicant.
Details for submission of materials
The composer must provide a legible and fully edited score and full set of parts suitable for rehearsal and performance. Printed materials should be submitted to the SSO office at the following address:

Alternatively, materials may be submitted as .pdf files: Scores should be formatted for printing on A3 and parts on A4. The score and individual parts must be prepared and saved as individual .pdf files with clearly identifiable names. Electronic submissions should be emailed to auditions@sso.org.sg (confirmation of receipt will be sent within two working days). Larger files should be sent by emailing a link to an online file sharing service to one folder containing all required files.
All materials, whether electronic or physical, must be received by 10am (GMT+8), Monday 13th January 2013. Incomplete submissions at this time may be disregarded. Materials which are not legible or correctly formatted will be disregarded.
If possible, suggested bowings should be indicated in the parts.
All submissions must be accompanied with a full CV including date of birth, nationality and current country of residence. The CV should include a list of compositions and notable performances to date.
Please provide also a short programme note (maximum 200 words).
Though not necessary, the composer may also send a recording of the submitted work(s). (MP3 format only, if submitted electronically.)

Composers will be notified by Wednesday January 29th if their work will be included in the workshop. All works submitted may be considered for future performance.
Inclusion of submitted scores in the workshop and / or concert in February 2014 will be at the sole discretion of the SSO
The workshop will be open to all composers who have submitted works. Composers whose works are selected for the workshop may invite up to five guests to attend. The concert will be a free event (prior registration may be required)
No recording (audio or visual) of the workshop process or concert other than by YSTCM/SSO will be permitted. An audio-visual recording of the workshop featuring the composers work will be made available to the composer for their personal reference and archive only. This recording may not be distributed or shared further without written permission from the SSO.
The SSO are unable to provide any expenses to attend the workshop or performance.
