Quick Chats with Dawid Kimberg and Bernadette Cullen

Our series of SLO exclusives continue with Dawid Kimberg (Jokanaan) and Bernadette Cullen (Herodias). these short interviews are commissioned by the SLO to be published on their website, but are first published here with kind permission from the SLO. Do check out their website to find biographical information about the high-profile cast. Meanwhile, here's some trivia information about the supporting cast:

Name: Bernadette Cullen

Nationality: Australian

Role: Herodias

SLO debut? Yes

I love my role in Salome because…

She is so dramatic and powerful, a very interesting character to play.

The characters of Salome are such a frightening bunch, why does your character deserve our sympathy and support?

She does not. Herodias is manipulative, power mad and neglectful of her daughter Salome.

What can audiences look forward to in your performances of your role?

All of the above (I hope), dramatic and very powerful.

My favourite recordings of Salome are:

The one by Dr. Birgit Nilsson!

What I love about working in Singapore:

It is a beautiful place; so pretty, so clean with nice people. I am enjoying it.

Name: Dawid Kimberg

Nationality: Estonian – born and grew up in South Africa

Role: Jokanaan

SLO debut? Yes. (Although Singapore audiences may have already seen him in action as Morales in Cathay Cineplex's presentation of Carmen 3D).

I love my role in Salome because…

Jokanaan is a complicated character with great music to sing. A lot of his scenes are declamatory but he also has some moving moments.

The characters of Salome are such a frightening bunch, why does your character deserve our sympathy and support?

My character is imprisoned for his beliefs whether they are right or wrong. For that he deserves a certain amount of sympathy although his beliefs are muddled and contradictory.

What can audiences look forward to in your performances of your role?

I hope that the audience will believe my portrayal as a realistic human being who is disturbed by visions and his beliefs.

Why did you decide to sing in Singapore and with the SLO?

I was invited by the director and jumped at the opportunity!

What I love about working in Singapore:

The weather is great and very good for the voice. The people are kind, courteous and hospitable. I love Singapore!
